Oaxaca Variations
Photography and Textiles by Gary Goldberg
July 2021 – September 2022
Gary Goldberg has been traveling to Oaxaca, Mexico, for over 20 years. He explores the city through photography, capturing abstract compositions of its richly textured walls and facades. His relationship with the city has deepened over time and, as he puts it, ‘I have come to see Oaxaca – its land, its sky, its cosmos – in a way that I believe is genuinely mine.” In Oaxaca Variations, we feature Gary Goldberg’s photographic work from recent years, including translations of his photography into felted artisanal textiles. Join us in exploring Gary’s vision as he highlights a magical city’s patina and depth.
About the Felting Process
Many of Gary Goldberg’s photographs have been transformed into textiles using a dry felting process at Taller Afelpado, San Agustín Etla, in Oaxaca. Each textile is hand-made by a team of three artisans, often taking up to three weeks to complete. They dye the wool with natural pigments and recreate, on a large scale, the color fields and textures found in his work. Over the last six years, he has made many trips to Oaxaca and spent months involved with the textile creation process. This collaborative process is made possible by the expertise of the Taller staff. The results are faithful interpretations with their own, unique qualities such as relief and shadow.
