Art of the African Diaspora Satellite Exhibit

We are honored to be a part of the 2025 Art of the African Diaspora exhibit, joining the work of the Richmond Art Center in supporting artists of African descent through representation, professional development, and the building of a creative community. The exhibit features the work of Tiffany Conway-Cornelius, Chantal Hildebrand, and Yolanda Holley, who each tell stories through their art, providing us with a rich exploration of the Black experience.
Through bold figuration in paint and imaginative storytelling, Tiffany Conway-Cornelius’ work is both joyful and contemplative. Using the human figure as a gateway to deeper understanding, it celebrates life’s complexities with grace and beauty. Chantal Hildebrand’s art emphasizes varied human forms amidst African patterns, lush flora, and revolutionary Black literature. Her linocut prints and wood carvings play with dynamics of stillness and motion, detail and void, line, and texture. Yolanda Holley strives to create art that transcends cultural and economic boundaries by exploring interpretations of kinship and life’s experience. She has a distinct textural approach using vibrant handmade paper, cloth, and paint.

Tiffany Conway-Cornelius
Tiffany Conway is an acclaimed Bay Area painter whose vibrant, imaginative works pay homage to the African Diaspora. Born in 1984, Tiffany masterfully blends bold, expressive styles to create paintings that traverse the intersections of past and present. Her largely self-taught journey has led her to become an award-winning artist, with her work featured in exhibitions across California and beyond.
Tiffany’s paintings are a rich tapestry of human experience, drawing from both memory and imagination. Utilizing bright colors and fluid forms, she crafts worlds that are deeply rooted in history yet brimming with modern energy. Her art offers a visually striking and emotionally resonant exploration of the Black experience, using the human figure as a gateway to deeper understanding. Through bold figuration and imaginative storytelling, Tiffany’s work is both joyful and contemplative, celebrating life’s complexities with grace and beauty.
Tiffany’s career is marked by significant milestones and accolades. She was a featured artist in the 2024 East Bay Open Studios and a nominee for the prestigious SECA Award at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Her work was also showcased in the *Kindred* exhibit, “A Gallery Through Time,” in Los Angeles in 2022, and she has been recognized as a Saatchi Art “Best of Fair” recipient at *The Other Art Fair* in both 2022 and 2024.

Chantal Hildebrand
Chantal Hildebrand is a Kenyan-American linocut printmaker based in Oakland, California. Her intricate prints and carvings depict Black bodies at rest in hyper-detailed surroundings.
Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, Chantal draws from years working for racial and gender justice in Burkina Faso, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, and the United States. Her art engages with themes of imperfection, embodiment, and self-love, as well as memories of her mother.
Chantal’s art emphasizes varied human forms amidst African patterns, lush flora, and revolutionary Black literature. Her prints play with dynamics of stillness and motion, detail and void, line and texture.
Her art depicts what happens behind closed doors when Black bodies are at rest: free from being perceived, assessed, or categorized. It manifests a world where Black bodies are honored, valued, and admired.

Yolanda D. Holley
Yolanda D. Holley has been stitching together the colorful richness of the human existence since 1990. Born in eastern Texas and raised on the peninsula of San Francisco, Yolanda incorporates the influences of her past.
Memories of her grandmother’s quilts and garments are self-embroidered impetuses for images depicting plain folk—passions for identity and kinship that blend perfectly. The silhouettes are void of facial expression but display themes of Black life experiences and wisdom intentionally forgotten by the greater assimilated communities. Her visual stories enable viewers to learn from and hold onto. Vibrant hues of handmade paper, cloth, and paint overlay figures to create scenes that simulate an almost dreamlike state.
Yolanda’s work is based not just on her being a Black artist but also her being a person. It’s the transition of art, viewer and artist that is as important as is reflection of style.
Serving on the Richmond Art Center board and the R.A.C. Exhibition Committee has provided an artistic home to exhibit her roots while helping others through organizations such as The Art of Living Black.
